About Harken Winches

Harken winches are designed to be reliable, rugged, and efficient. They feature more bearings than comparable winches and have wide-diameter spindles to decrease bearing loads for reduced friction.

Harken One, Two and Three Speed Winches

harken standard winchesHarken® single-speed winches are the finest small winches made. They feature all-metal bases and bushings or bearings where other brands use plastic bodies and no bearings. The B6 and B8 feature a simple Delrin® bearing sleeve. This bearing is almost maintenance free and requires only occasional cleaning. These winches are ideal for small daysailers and pocket cruisers who want to avoid the hassle of pulling direct from the sheet. The B32.2 and B40.2 both have roller bearings on the interior center shaft and 17-4 PH stainless primary gears- features generally found only on competitors' larger winches.

Three-speed winches are popular for sheets on racing boats where fast line speed during tacks is important. The B48.3 is a direct-drive winch with a very fast first gear. Select first gear by depressing the name-plate next to the handle socket. Reverse handle rotation and the winch will automatically move to the next gear in sequence. First gear can be ignored in heavy air.

Harken Self Tailing Winches

harken self tailing winches, sailboat winchesSelf-tailing winches are ideal for sheets, halyards, and control lines on racing and cruising boats. The self-tailing mechanism means that one crew member can quickly and easily trim or raise sails.

The B16ST is a one-speed winch. The handle drives in one direction and ratchets in the other to facilitate cranking under high loads. All others are two-speed self-tailing winches. Two-speed winches enable quick grinding in first gear out of a tack or jibe. When the sheet loads up, the reverse direction gives more power in second gear.

All have Harken " super holding" jaws and one-piece sculpted line guide and peeler. Winches up to the 53 have composite fiber-filled self-tailing jaws that have a gentle angle and tooth design for easy entry and " super holding" with or without load. Larger winches have aluminum jaws. Four springs ensure that jaws open evenly so line is easy to insert.

Harken Three Speed Self Tailing Winches

harken self tailing winchesThree-speed Harken self-tailing winches are ideal sheet winches on larger boats. Coupled with Harken's large drum diameters, three-speed self-tailing winches offer very high line speeds for racing or fast cruising, even in heavy conditions. Self-tailing allows one crew member to handle the entire trimming task-perfect for cruising or racing boats.

First gear is selected by depressing the nameplate ring next to the winch handle socket. The winch the auto-shifts from first to second to third on successive crank sheet trimming in light to moderate air.

All large three-speed winches offer drums supported by ball bearings, two gears driving the drum, 17-4 PH stainless shaft pins, and roller bearings on all gears. By special order, the B74.3 can be provided with power rations of 85:1 or 92:1 for use on high loads such as found on very large boats or multihulls.

Harken Quattro Racing Winches

harken quattro winchesThe patented Quattro is an innovative all-in-one winch used on boats that require extremely fast winches to handle large asymmetrical spinnakers, but also need power to trim the genoa upwind. The quattro features two drum diameters and four line speeds. The wide-diameter lower drum is used for fast trimming, the upper drum when more power is needed.

Self-tailing Quattro winches are used on larger offshore boats that trim on the cabin house: speed for the spinnaker, but power and self-tailing ability for the guy and halyards. Standard winches have stainless steel roller bearings. They feature ball bearing races to support the vertical load of the drum. Quattro racing winches incorporate lightweight PEEK® roller bearings, and aluminum castles.

Use for : - Best for Spinnaker Sheets

Harken Two and Three Speed Self Tailing Racing Winches

harken racing winchesTwo and three speed racing winches are offered with hard anodized aluminum drums and feature PEEK® bearings for exceptional weight savings, low friction, and high performance. Each winch features " super gripping" composite or aluminum jaws and sculpted one-piece line guide and peeler.

Two-speed Harken self tailing racing winches are ideal for most primary, secondary, halyard, running, backstay, and control lines applications. Three-speed self-tailing winches are used as secondary and halyard winches on large racing boats and as primary winches on short-handed racing boats. The high-speed first gear is engaged by depressing the nameplate ring. Use first gear for fast sheet trimming in light air.

Harken Electric Winches

harken electric winchesHarken electric winches offer cruising sailors the convenience of powered winches in a easily installed system. Harken® offers the most complete line of electric winches available, with sizes ranging from the B40.2ST, which is suitable for use as a primary winch on boats as small as 28 ft (8.5m) and for halyards on boats from 32 ft (9.7 m).

All Harken electric winches, including the smaller sizes, operate in two speeds both when using the electric motor and when cranking by hand. Electric winches form the 60 may be special ordered with three speeds to provide very high line speeds.

Operation is by use of simple waterproof switches that are located near the winch. Inserting a locking handle when the winch is not under load automatically disconnects the electric motor gearbox for racing and cruising without electric power. The disconnect mechanism prevents handle and winch rotation when the switch is activated. For people who frequently use their boat for racing Harken advise the use of the racing disconnect rod that holds the winch in manual mode permanently.

Harken® electric winches through the B980 are offered for either 12 or 24 volts. Motors are mounted either vertically or horizontally on winches through the B980 to match your installation requirements. The anchor plate allows separate disassembly of the winch and the motor/gear reduction assembly. Both the motor and gear reduction assembly. Both the motor and gear reduction box feature special anti-corrosion protection.

Harken Electric Control Boxes, Circuit Breakers & Switches

harken control boxesBoth electric and hydraulic winches requires switches. In addition, electric winches require appropriate control boxes that must be chosen based on the winch, the voltage, and the number of winches to be controlled. Hydraulic power units are supplied with appropriate control boxes.

Switches
Harken® offers simple, water-protected switches for use with electric and hydraulic winches. Order two switches for each winch, one for each speed.

Electrical Control Boxes
Electrical control boxes contain the solenoids to operate the winches. Each box will control one winch. Boats with more winches require additional control boxes.

High Amperage Circuit Breakers

Harken® offers four panel-mount, high-amperage circuit breakers. These units are ideal for use with electric winches. They are compact, waterproof, and ignition proof. When tripped a small flag shows and a button allows the circuit to be opened as if using a switch. Circuit breakers are rated to 30volts DC and have 3000 amp interrupt capability.

Harken Service Kits

harken winches service kitsSimple service kits are available to permit routine maintenance of Harken® winches. Kits are available with drum screws, pawls, and springs. Harken® winch grease is a non-aging, high-adhesive synthetic lubricant with a temperature range from - 200ºC (- 150ºF) to 1500ºC (3020ºF). It is resistant to both salt and fresh water and protects metal gears, roller bearings, and all moving winch parts from corrosion and wear. Note: Do not grease pawls, plastic rollers, or balls.

Metric wrenches are also available for use with Harken® winches. The premium quality BK4510 is perfect for heavy-duty use in shops, while the BK4509 is a high-quality wrench set for occasional use.
