Reflex Furling Techniques
While flying a reflex furler, back wraps can occur if the sail isn't properly controlled during the initial unfurling stage. This happens when the sail unfurls faster than the reflex cable can spool, causing the cable to loop back and jam.
Here's how to prevent and address back wraps:
- Control the Unfurling: During the first third of the unfurling process, pay close attention and gradually release the furling line. This allows the reflex cable to properly spool and reduces the risk of a back wrap.
- Stop and Unwrap (if necessary): If a back wrap occurs, immediately stop unfurling. Then, roll the unit back up, allowing the back wrap to unfurl from the cable. Once clear, you can resume unfurling the sail with controlled speed.
- Crew Coordination: Assign one crew member to control the driveline (maintaining sheet tension) and another to manage the furling line. This coordinated approach ensures proper sail control and reduces the risk of back wraps.
